Macedonia Opposition Plans to Form Govt After Violence

Sunday, April 30th, 2017

Macedonia’s opposition Social Democrats said Sunday they would push ahead in forming a government with ethnic Albanian partners, following an eruption of violence when protesters who oppose them stormed parliament, AFP reported.

Nationalist demonstrators forced their way into the building on Thursday evening and the ensuing riots left scores injured, including Social Democrat (SDSM) leader Zoran Zaev and other MPs.

The protesters oppose a proposed coalition between the SDSM and minority ethnic Albanian parties, which they allege is a threat to national unity.

Thursday’s violence – which met with international condemnation – was sparked by what the protesters said was an illegal vote for a new parliamentary speaker, ethnic Albanian Talat Xhaferi.

The SDSM and their allies accuse the rival conservative VMRO-DPMNE party of inciting the violence and using the ethnic card in a bid to cling to power, in the face of grave corruption allegations during the party’s decade-long rule.

An SDSM statement said the new speaker had been lawfully elected and a new government would be voted on by MPs “in the forthcoming period”.

The European Union and Washington have also supported Xhaferi’s election to the post, and US deputy assistant secretary of state Hoyt Brian Yee flew into Skopje on Sunday for talks to help end the deadlock.

The violence was the latest episode in a two-year political crisis in the unstable Balkan country of roughly two million people.

An early election in December was supposed to end the turmoil but has only deepened it, with nationalist protesters taking to the streets every night.

The VMRO-DPMNE party, led by former premier Nikola Gruevski, narrowly won the most seats in the December vote but failed to strike a deal with king making Albanian groups.

Ethnic Albanians make up around a quarter of Macedonia’s population.

Although Zaev then struck a deal to rule in coalition with Albanian parties, President Gjorge Ivanov – an ally of Gruevski – has denied them a mandate to rule.

He, and the protesters, allege sovereignty would be undermined by the Albanians’ demands, particularly that Albanian be made an official language nationwide.

But his refusal to grant Zaev a mandate has met with EU and US disapproval.

The crisis erupted in 2015 when Zaev released tapes that appeared to show mass surveillance by the government under Gruevski, as well as top-level corruption.

Gruevski has denied the allegations but stepped down last year for the election.

The situation in Skopje was calm on Sunday, with many residents out of town for the holiday weekend.

Galab Donev: ‘Forming A Parliamentary Commission on Outstanding Salaries Is a Step In the Right Derection’

Sunday, April 30th, 2017

In an interview for the Bulgarian National Radio, Caretaker Minister of Labour and Social Policy Galab Donev described the formation of a parliamentary commission for analyzing the problems connected with unpaid salaries by different companies as a positive step.

‘’We have legislation that guarantees that workers and employees shall be paid their due salaries, but is this legislation being applied effectively – and I am not talking only about labour law here’’, Minister Donev said and went on to cite commercial law, where any delay in outstanding payments to other suppliers should signal that something is wrong at the enterprise in question.

UK PM May Braces for Difficult Brexit Talks After EU Adopts Tough Stance

Sunday, April 30th, 2017

British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Sunday divorce talks with the European Union would be difficult, responding to the tough stance taken by EU leaders over the upcoming Brexit negotiations, Reuters reported.

EU leaders endorsed stiff divorce terms for Britain on Saturday and warned Britons to have “no illusions” about swiftly securing a new relationship to keep their access to EU markets.

“What this shows, and what some of the other comments we’ve seen coming from European leaders shows, is that there are going to times when these negotiations are going to be tough,” May told the BBC.

May also reaffirmed her position that she would be prepared to walk away from the talks on leaving the EU without a deal if she did not like what was on offer from Brussels.

About 40,000 Are The Visitors Of The Tourist Route "In the Steps of Vazov and his Heroes" After It’s Start

Sunday, April 30th, 2017

The number of visitors to the Ivan Vazov House Museum in Sopot has reached 40 000 people after the creation of the tourist route “In the Steps of Vazov and his Heroes”. This was said by Stefan Filchev, director of the museum, for FOCUS Radio – Plovdiv.

The route has been in place for three years, with about 28,000 previously registered visitors. “We are very actively promoting this route. All of the tour operators who visit us are very fond of this idea and therefore the numbers of visitors are constantly increasing, “Filchev said.

Walking along the entire tourist route takes about 3 hours. “We are trying to create attractions and static museum exhibits. The tourists have the opportunity to touch a particular craft, to work with the master, to drink coffee in a completely different atmosphere – the past”.

He stressed that the visitors of Sopot and the Ivan Vazov Museum House can both experience the history, the atmosphere and the culture, given the large number of people who gave this city of Bulgaria, especially during the Renaissance.

EU Says United Ireland Would Be Automatic Full Member

Saturday, April 29th, 2017

European Union leaders promised on Saturday to embrace the British province of Northern Ireland into the EU if a referendum unites it with the Republic of Ireland, Reuters reports.

At a summit called to agree the EU’s plan for negotiating with Britain at it leaves the bloc, Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny asked fellow members to acknowledge that Northern Ireland would, like East Germany in 1990, automatically enter the EU in the event of unification with existing member state.
